Even though it’s still, like, a billion degrees out here in southern California, I can’t help but dream about fall. The rich jewel-toned colors, the textures, the ability to wear things with sleeves again… Okay, maybe not so much here. It will probably be a disheartening 80 or so degrees until November, but I can still pretend that we have a decent season to look forward to!
I’ve been keeping track of what’s trendy now and making some predictions about what I think will carry over into fall. Here are some of my favorite looks that I can’t wait to try out in a few months:
Stripes are very prevalent right now, and I think that they will remain so throughout fall. Even though we’ve all heard the advice that horizontal stripes can make us look wide, I think that they are perfectly wearable in moderation, such as in the shot above.
Or if you really want that BAM! curve appeal, try them in a skirt paired with neutral colors and some beautiful leather accessories. And speaking of leather accessories…
You can’t really have a proper fall season without some lovely tall boots. This year, rich brown leathers (think tan and cognac) are showing up everywhere. They add a classy touch to outfits when it’s just too hot to wear black, and cognac leather ages beautifully, so you know that this kind of investment will last for many years.
Large leather handbags and cross-body bags are also making the rounds, and look wonderful paired with a light denim or chambray shirt.
Denim in the form of well-worn jeans (rolled at the cuffs and/or ripped) or soft button-up shirts have made a comeback in a big way. Pairing two different washes is entirely wearable as long as there is a clear difference in the colors – try a lighter wash with a darker one so that it doesn’t look like you’re in head-to-toe denim.
The laid-back feel of these pieces work perfectly with the stripes and neutral leathers for a classic “American lady traipsing through crunchy piles of vibrant autumn leaves” feel.
And because not all places will get to experience that apple-scented, brisk classic fall weather (southern California, I’m looking at you here), the denim trend of summery cutoffs is sure to stick around for a while. They can be dressed up with some cute strappy heels, a silky, billowy shirt, and some delicate gold jewelry, but my favorite way to wear them is with some chunky boots and a checked shirt – another fall 2013 favorite.
Even though they are generally considered more winter-like, color combinations like black and gold or black and white are popular now and don’t look like they are going anywhere soon. While the black and white combo made for some very elegant red-carpet looks this summer, I expect that it will turn towards less complicated styles to match the relaxed feel of the other fall trends.
If you don’t favor the look of cognac leather, gold accessories are another option. Pair some basic pieces in neutral colors with a few delicate gold accessories for a casually elegant look.
Other pieces I intend to add to my wardrobe to round out my autumn looks:
- A leopard-print scarf and/or ballet flats
- Something in red
- Aviator glasses in brown or grey
And there you are: my picks for fall. Do you have any trends you’re loving and plan to continue in the next few months? Anything in particular you’re looking forward to incorporating back into your wardrobe? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
