I’ve gotten a lot of requests lately for the nail polish and lipstick that was featured in an image I used in my Fall 2013 Fashion Trend: Burgundy post. I included the photo because I loved the colors, with the intention of it being an inspirational picture rather than featuring a specific brand. Unfortunately, when I went back to find the brand of lipstick and nail polish, I found out it was edited, and no original brand was ever credited.
Fail.
This, for those who are curious, is the offending image:
It is, however, a gorgeous color and I understand how it could become popular. Since I wasn’t able to find the exact brands and shades, I did the next best thing and found some great dupes. And to make up for the disappointment of not having the backstory on the picture, I’m including some of my favorite tips on how to get this look so that you can come up with your own perfect burgundy nail and lip combo at home!
For a dupe of the shade shown above, I would recommend MAC lipstick in Dark Side over NYX Cosmetics lip liner in the shade Currant.
To achieve the perfect deep burgundy lip, first exfoliate your lips with a toothbrush or a bit of sugar to get rid of any chapped skin. Apply a light coat of lip balm – just enough to moisturize without adding too much gloopiness. (Yes, that’s the technical term.)
Line and fill in your lips with NYX Currant (or any other dark lip pencil). Blot with a tissue. For extra staying power, go over your lips very lightly with a dusting of translucent powder.
Next, use a lip brush (for added precision) and paint in MAC Dark Side (or similar color) over the lip liner. If you wish, you can do a slightly ombre look by concentrating the lipstick in the middle of the lips and blending it closer to the edges, so that the darker Currant peeks out. Otherwise, brush the color in an even coat over your lips and blot with a tissue. Repeat this step if you want an even deeper color payoff.
Once you have your lip color done, take a clean flat synthetic makeup brush (or a clean lip brush) and apply concealer around the edges of your lips to clean up any feathery lines or smudges. This will give you the crisp edges that can make a dark lip look very polished.
For the nails, the closest dupes I could find are Chanel Nail Color 18 Rouge Noir and Chanel Nail Color 573 Accessoire.
Both of these shades are cream burgundy. The major difference I could see was that Rouge Noir is slightly warmer, while Accessoire is a tiny bit more plummy. If you prefer cool tones, Accessoire may be more flattering on you, while those who like neutral or warmer tones may like Rouge Noir better.
I hope this has helped those of you searching for the perfect burgundy lip and nail combo. If you find any others that you love, please feel free to share them in the comments below!
